Lithuanian champions Gintra of Šiauliai announce another addition for 2026. Defender Athena Diachenko, who introduces herself as Atėnė, returns to Lithuania from England to join the yellow and blacks. The 19-year-old will wear number 22.

Born and raised in England, Atėnė began playing very young. At eight she joined a boys' team, where she learned to love football, stand up for herself and embrace physical contact. At ten, she moved to a girls' team and continued developing her skills.

Her entire career before this move had been in England. She represented several clubs, most recently Actonians in the FA Women's National League. She entered women's football at 16, requiring rapid adaptation to a higher tempo, greater physical demands and psychological resilience.

'Moving into women's football meant I had to become stronger physically and mentally very quickly, learn discipline and adapt to different styles. That was essential to compete at a high level,' Atėnė recalled.

In November 2024 she earned another important recognition, making her Lithuania senior women's debut in a friendly. It reflected the national team's scouts having followed her for some time.

The invitation to join Gintra is a significant career step for Atėnė.

'Moving to Gintra is a big step forward. Playing for the champions in Lithuania is an honour and a source of pride. This is a professional environment where I can improve every day and be part of a club with such a history and winning mentality,' the smiling newcomer said.

Atėnė emphasises daily work and responsibility to the team. The athletic defender hopes focused hard work will earn opportunities not only in the Lithuanian A League but also internationally, in the Baltic League and UEFA Champions League.

Club Director Mantas Radavičius welcomed another Lithuanian as the club continues building its domestic core.

'Atėnė is an interesting and promising addition. She developed in England's football system and has good physical preparation, discipline and the right attitude. She wants to improve and understands high ambitions. We believe she will integrate well, quickly understand our style, find her role and contribute significantly to victories,' M. Radavičius said.

Returning to Lithuania and joining Gintra opens an ambitious new chapter, combining her experience in English football with opportunities to return to the national team and compete for trophies with the country's strongest women's club.

A. Diachenko strengthens the balance between youth and experience and reaffirms the club's commitment to investing in talented Lithuanian players ready for a higher level.

The first official matches are planned for February in the Baltic League: RFS of Riga on 15 February and Saku Sporting in Estonia on 22 February.
