After winning Baltic League bronze at the weekend, Gintra return to the Topo centras Euronics Women's A League this week. UEFA Women's Champions League qualifying also awaits in Šiauliai on 4–7 September.
Ahead of the season's crucial phase, Finnish goalkeeper Liisa Tuomi strengthened the squad, arriving last week. The promising 21-year-old has already debuted in the Baltic League bronze-medal match wearing number 10.
Her debut included extra time after a draw in normal time, followed by a penalty shootout. Gintra's newcomer showed excellent reactions and composure at the decisive moment, saving Žalgiris' final two penalties to secure victory.
Known for lightning reactions, agility and reading the game, Liisa spent most of her Finnish career at Honka Espoo. She began training there at seven and briefly played for fellow Finnish club JYKP at eighteen. In 2023, Honka loaned her to Sweden's Linköping for her first overseas experience. After returning home, she accepted the Lithuanian champions' invitation, quickly travelled to Šiauliai and now eagerly awaits a Champions League debut.
"Liisa showed sound foundations and the necessary skills in her first match. Although young, she already has the mental strength vital for a goalkeeper. We hope her arrival creates healthy competition and further motivates everyone to prove their ability and earn the coaches' trust," said director Mantas Radavičius.
The Topo centras Euronics Women's A League returns after the summer break next week. Gintra begin the third cycle of fixtures at home against Hegelmann of Kaunas District at Šiauliai Central Stadium on Sunday, 25 August, at 19:00.
Šiauliai hosts UEFA Women's Champions League qualifying on 4–7 September. In Group 3, the Lithuanian champions compete for one place in the main tournament against legendary Scottish club Celtic, Finnish champions KuPS Kuopio and Moldovan league winners Agarista CSF.
