Gintra begin their 2023 Women's A League season this weekend. The multiple champions host runners-up Vilnius MFA Žalgiris-MRU in a particularly anticipated opener.
Seven teams compete this year: those two, last season's bronze medallists FK Vilnius, Hegelmann, Saned, Banga and returning top-flight side Utenis Utena.
Head coach Kaloyan Petkov says preparations went smoothly, including two Baltic League matches and serious Winter Cup tests. Mutual understanding and playing quality are still improving.
"New players brought a period of getting acquainted and building connections. We approach positively after retaining the Winter Cup and earning two Baltic League wins for confidence. Our play isn't yet at its peak, but it's early and newcomers require tactical adjustments. We're happy to open at home and aim to win," said Petkov, entering his second season.
American goalkeeper Adrianna Schroeder and Canadian centre-back Kalin O'Brien recently joined. Schroeder has already debuted in the Baltic League; Sunday's Žalgiris-MRU match should be O'Brien's first appearance.
"Newcomers bring depth and options for different match scenarios. A full squad improves training effectiveness and competition, essential for progress and top results. Injuries happen too, so depth protects long-term stability. I'm pleased with their work, motivation and enthusiasm and expect useful contributions soon," he said.
The opener immediately pits Gintra against opponents always seeking points from the champions. Asked how the Vilnius team have changed, Petkov said assessment was difficult because he had not seen their recent matches.
"We know they always approach us seriously and ambitiously. We must bring the right attitude and full concentration for both a positive result and quality football. I believe in our players' desire and motivation to start with a win. We're preparing for a serious battle and invite supporters to give us that extra energy," he said.
The match takes place at Šiauliai's Gytariai artificial-turf stadium on Sunday, 26 March, at 16:00. Admission is free.
